Happy #WorldRainforestDay!

We cannot stop climate change without saving rainforests. Every day, we lose an area of rainforest the size of Bristol, and this destruction releases vast amounts of carbon, driving climate change. 2.5 gigatonnes of CO₂ are released into our atmosphere annually, yet, in spite of this destruction, the tropical forests that remain still remove twice this quantity of CO₂ equivalents from the atmosphere each year. That’s why we partner with @rainforesttrustuk to protect tropical forests, prevent deforestation and keep carbon stored.

One of our planet’s most important carbon stores, the Peruvian Amazon, is vital in the global fight against climate change. Its forests are also home to hundreds of Indigenous communities who rely on the land for their survival. Criminals target unprotected lands that are “undesignated” — with no clear ownership or legal authority looking out for them. These communities are threatened by illegal mining, drug and land trafficking, logging and monoculture plantations, including coca plantations for the drug trade.

Rainforest Trust is working with partner Confederación de Nacionalidades Amazónicas del Perú and supported by the International Land Coalition to secure land tenure rights on half a million acres of Indigenous territories in some of the last remaining tracts of Amazon rainforest in Peru. The project will support at least 30 Indigenous communities who urgently want to conserve their lands.
